About Humble

Humble is to the northeast of Downtown Houston. It is surrounded by unincorporated areas and is directly east of the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (formerly known as the Houston Intercontinental Airport). The construction of the airport in 1969 brought more people to the city.

The city began in the late 19th century. The name of the city came from an early settler named Pleasant Smith "Plez" Humble. Humble eventually became the justice of the peace to the area. However, the city became a boomtown after the Spindletop discovery. The Humble oilfields became the largest producing fields in Texas. The town became the home of the Humble Oil & Refining Company which eventually merged with Exxon. Since then, oil production has declined and residents began to look for income from other sources.
