About Sugar Land

Sugar Land is located approximately 22 miles southwest of Downtown Houston. It is accessible from Houston via I-69. Sugar Land used to be considered a "Company Town". It was owned by the Imperial Sugar company. The town was owned by the company from 1910-1959. During the 1950's Imperial Sugar wanted to expand the town, as it grew, so did the desire for a municipal government. The first mayor of Sugar Land was voted into office in 1959.

After it became a city, the amount of construction within city limits exploded. A number of master planned communities were built and many companies moved their headquarters to Sugar Land. The city has changed from a blue collar community to a white-collar suburb.
